Dr. Steven G. Blunt is a “native son” of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and the son of the late Rev. Dr. Henry Blunt and Mrs. Clarissa P. Blunt of Franklin, Virginia. He is a 1996 Cum Laude Honor Graduate of Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia (B.A. Degree in Religion & Philosophy), a 1999 Cum Laude Honor Graduate of the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology of Virginia Union University (Master of Divinity Degree), a 2002 Honor Graduate of the Union Presbyterian School of Christian Education of Richmond, Virginia (Master of Theology Degree with a concentration in the field of Ethics and Historical Philosophy), and is also a 2009 graduate of Howard University’s School of Divinity in Washington, D.C. where he attained the Degree of Doctor of Ministry.
Closing in on almost 30 years of serving within the pastorate, Dr. Blunt proudly served as the pastor of the Mt. Ararat Missionary Baptist Church of Windsor, NC for six years before humbly accepting the call in 2002 to become the Senior Pastor of the historic First Baptist Church Mahan Street of Suffolk, Virginia, where has served for the past 23 years.
Dr. Blunt is a Former President of the Baptist General Convention of Virginia (the youngest President elected in state convention history) providing leadership to some 1,075 African-American churches across the state of Virginia. He has served as a board member of Virginia Union University’s Board of Trustees, a member of the Advisory Council for the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology, and currently serves the university as an adjunct instructor of Systematic Theology, Christology, and Theological Ethics.
In 2013 Dr. Blunt was elected as one of the youngest inductees into the prestigious Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Board of Preachers of Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA in affirmation of his advocacy for the academy and the work of social justice and in 2015 was honored to share as the Conference Morning Preacher for the nationally renowned Hampton University Minister’s Conference.
Dr. Blunt has served and continues to serve in various community dynamics such as the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Commission on Youth, The Virginia Prisoner and Juvenile Offender Re-Entry Council, the Board of Directors for the Western Tidewater Community Service Board, the Board of Advisors for Dominion Energy, the Executive & General Board of the Baptist General Convention of Virginia, the Suffolk Chapter of the American Red Cross, and on several other communal advocacy organizations throughout the Hampton Roads Area and the Commonwealth. Additionally, Dr. Blunt is also a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established in 1906 for African-American men.
In his spare time, Dr. Blunt enjoys spending time with his family, readings in classical literature, comic books, anything within the Marvel, D.C., or Star Wars Universe, and listening to Neo-Soul, R&B, Gospel, and Hip-Hop classics. Dr. Blunt is happily married to Mrs. Brandey L. Blunt and they are the very proud and blessed parents of two daughters, Kari and Kori.
